실제 네이비 실 출신이 네이비 실이 나오는 전쟁영화를 본다면?

남성 매거진, GQ의 유투브 채널에 특정 분야 전문가들이 헐리우드 영화를 분석하는 '브레이크다운(The Breakdown)'이라는 코너가 있다. 예를 들자면, 유명한 프로 스케이트보더, 토니 호크(Tony Hawk)가 여러 헐리우드 영화에 나온 스케이트보드 씬을 보면서 평가하는 식이다. 한마디로 말하자면, 전문가의 눈으로 봤을 때 어떤 게 현실적이고 어떤 게 비현실적인가를 들어보는 코너라고 할 수 있다.

며칠 전에는 전직 네이비 실(Navy SEALs) 출신, 자코 윌린크(Jocko Willink)가 출연했다.

전 미 해군 특수부대 출신이자 현재는 저자 겸 연사로 활동하는 자코 윌린크는 네이비 실이 나오는 헐리우드 영화 '네이비 실(Navy SEALs)', '액트 오브 밸러(Act of Valor)', '아메리칸 스나이퍼(American Sniper)', '론 서바이버(Lone Survivor)', '캡틴 필립스(Captain Phillips)', '제로 다크 서티(Zero Dark Thirty)'를 보면서 실제 네이빌 실 출신의 눈으로 봤을 때 무엇이 현실적이고 비현실적인지를 설명했다.

영화 '네이비 실'은 픽션이고, '액트 오브 밸러'는 현역 네이비 실이 직접 주연을 맡아 화제를 모았던 영화이며, 나머지 '아메리칸 스나이퍼', '론 서바이버', '캡틴 필립스', '제로 다크 서티'는 실제로 있었던 사건을 바탕으로 한 영화다.

윌린크는 영화 '아메리칸 스나이퍼'의 실제 주인공, 크리스 카일(Chris Kyle)과 이라크 라마디에서 함께 작전을 펼쳤던 인연도 있다.

윌린크는 네이비 실이 나오는 영화들의 전투 씬을 보면서  어떤 것은 실제와 같고 어떤 것은  비현실적이라고 지적하면서, 그 이유에 대해 설명했다.

재미있는 건, "Unrealistic"을 넘어 "Dumb"이라고 혹평을 받은 씬이 나오는 영화가 실제 네이비 실이 주연을 맡아 화제가 됐던 '액트 오브 밸러'라는 것.


윌린크는 마지막에 멋진 클로징 멘트도 잊지 않았다:

"One of the big misconceptions that people have of people that are in the SEAL teams is that they are some kind of super human individuals. You gotta remember that SEALs are just people. They train really hard, work really hard to try and be good at our jobs. But they are still people. They are not just Terminator robots. We watched bunch of movies of these different operations or these fictitious operations, but we gotta remember that the SEALs, just like every other branch of the service, has taken massive casualties. Not only in our history but in these recent wars. So even though it might look cool, you gotta remember that there's been real sacrifices made. Not just by the SEALs themselves, not just by the Marines, and the Army, and the Air Force, but the families at home as well that suffer those losses and live with those for the rest of their lives. We always have to remember what the real sacrifices are." - Jocko Willink

네이비 실만 "터미네이터 로봇"으로 생각하는 것이 아니라 미군 전체를 그렇게 보는 사람들도 많다. 미국인들에게는 미군이 "형제자녀"라는 점을 잊어선 안 된다.
